The history of Hawaiian Jewelry dates back to 1887 when Hawaii’s last reigning monarch, Queen Lili’uokalani, attended the jubilee of England’s Queen Victoria. The Queen presented the Hawaiian monarch with a precious soled gold bracelet specially engraved with her name in Old English lettering, filled with black enamel. Since the late 1700’s, the cultural influenced of the British was deeply admired by the Hawaiian monarch. Queen Lili’uokalani cherished her unique gift and always wore it. Upon her return to Hawaii, the Queen had similar bracelets made for other members of the royal family as an expression of her appreciation. Thus, a legacy amongst the Hawaiian royalty was created and the tradition lives on today. Hawaiian Jewelry is often given to celebrate milestones such as birthdays, graduations, weddings and anniversaries. Because of its timeless beauty and personal significances, these gifts become cherished heirlooms that are passed on from generation to generation.
Since 1996, Maxi is the pioneer of contemporary Hawaiian Jewelry being the first company to take traditional designs to the next level. Traditional casting techniques limited jewelry designs to a fixed width and shape. By learning and mastering these techniques, we established our own in-house casting method. Our new method allows us to customize each piece, expanding our style and forever changing the look of traditional Hawaiian Jewelry. Taking a risk to incorporate traditional casting techniques with modern designs has led to Maxi’s success.
